Alcott Street Dam Removal and Portage Creek Restoration
About this Project
Houston-based environmental firm MECx, Inc. hired our team to provide various services for a dam removal and creek restoration project in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
- Safety oversight
- Engineering
- Surveying
- Vibration monitoring
- Utility locating
- Well abandonment services
Safety oversight
We were primarily responsible for performing safety oversight duties, including:
- Leading tailgate safety meetings
- Worker monitoring
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) checks
- Processing safety documentation (including necessary work activity permits)
Engineering
Our team also assisted the MECX Project Manager with engineering tasks. For instance, we prepared design plans and figures for proposed activities, which included flood analysis and recommendations for removing the dam.
Surveying
The survey team stepped in to complement our engineering support as well — they performed longitudinal profiles, cross-sections, and settlement readings. Our design team also created 3-D models, which help the contractor excavate and grade efficiently in wet river channel conditions.
More services
We also managed dam demolition and river channel excavation activities, including water quality and vibration monitoring. And further, we abandoned on-site monitoring wells and performed underground utility locating and mapping services.
Our engineers, surveyors, and safety professionals ensured all contractors were working within compliance. Throughout the project, we also assured local stakeholders that the work was performed using safe and effective management practices.
